A kid's field guide to birds in Victoria

Where kids meet Victorian Birds

Hi, I'm Max. I photograph birds in the bush, at the beach and around Melbourne. Here you can meet the birds I've found, print activities for your next walk, and find good places to look.

How it started

Birding on family walks

I started birdwatching a few months ago. My family goes walking in the bush or near the beach with my little brother Daniel, who is two. While my parents walk with Daniel, I look for birds and take photos.

Now Daniel has his own binoculars. If a two-year-old can do it, so can you! All you need is to go outside, walk slowly and listen.

Bird of the month

Superb Fairywren

Mother fairywrens sing a 'password' to their eggs. The chicks use that call when they hatch to ask for food. In spring the males are bright blue, so now is a great time to look for them in low bushes.

Be a good birder

  • Walk slowly and talk quietly.
  • Stay on the track and keep your distance.
  • Never touch or go near a nest.
  • Don't feed wild birds.
  • Always go with a grown-up.
