Sherbrooke Forest

Dandenong Ranges

Tall mountain ash forest and fern gullies. Home to Superb Lyrebirds and King-Parrots.

Tip: Lyrebirds copy other birds' songs. Listen for a bird that sounds like many birds!

Lillydale Lake

Lilydale

A lake with flat, easy paths and a boardwalk through the wetlands. Look for waterbirds like ducks and cormorants.

Tip: The paths are flat, so it's a great walk with little kids and prams.

When to look

  • Early morning is the best time. Birds are busy looking for food.
  • Spring is exciting: birds are singing and building nests.
  • Look near water, flowers and fruit. That's where the food is.

Stay safe

Always go with a grown-up, stay on the track, and check the weather and any park closures before you go. In spring, some magpies swoop near their nests, so wear a hat and walk calmly past.
